The Real Reason Kids Need Creative Spaces This Summer

A few weeks ago at EPC, a little girl sat completely locked into playing with the play dough at our Earth Day sensory station. She was so focused on creating — carefully squishing, rolling, and shaping the dough with so much intention — that I couldn’t help but smile and point it out to one of our team members.

Moments like that remind us why creative spaces matter so much. As someone who has always loved art and hands-on creativity, I always knew we wanted EPC to offer opportunities for children to create freely. And as we’ve started planning our summer creative workshops, we’ve found ourselves thinking more and more about the important role creativity plays in childhood — and just how much children are learning while they create.

Confidence Starts Small

One of the sweetest things to witness is watching a child realize: “I made this.” It may not be perfect, but they did it. And for little kids, that feeling matters.

There’s something powerful about giving children the freedom to create without being corrected every few seconds. No “stay inside the lines.” No pressure to make it look Pinterest-perfect. We’ve noticed that even quieter children often begin opening up during creative activities. They start explaining their ideas, making choices confidently, and taking pride in what they’ve created. Sometimes the masterpiece isn’t the painting itself—it’s the confidence built while making it.

Art Teaches Problem Solving (Without Them Realizing It)

Kids are constantly figuring things out while creating. “What happens if I mix these colors?” “How do I make this stand up?” “What can I use if this doesn’t work?”

Creative play encourages flexible thinking in a natural way. Those little moments of frustration are important too. The paint smudges. The project doesn’t turn out the way they imagined. But then they adapt. They pivot. They keep going.

As parents, it can be hard not to jump in and “fix” everything for them. But some of the best growth happens when kids are given the chance to work through small challenges on their own. My daughter Eden loves to be creative, but she also can be a bit of a perfectionist (I wonder where she gets THAT from...LOL). We love doing projects together and any time something "messes up" I always tell her- "There's no such thing as 'messed up' in art!" I'll watch her pivot and figure it out and make a beautiful creation. It may not be like the example we're following, but it's her own unique design.

Not Every Child Expresses Themselves the Same Way

Some kids process emotions through words. Others process through movement. And some? Through markers, glitter, paint, and play dough.

Creative spaces give children a safe outlet to express feelings they may not even fully understand yet.

We see it all the time at EPC: Kids telling stories through pretend play. Creating colorful “masterpieces” that only make sense to them. And honestly, that’s kind of the beauty of it.

Art gives kids permission to explore who they are without needing to explain themselves perfectly.

Summer Doesn’t Always Need to Be Overscheduled

There’s so much pressure during summer to constantly keep kids entertained.

Camps.Sports.Activities.Schedules.Screens. But sometimes children need slower moments too.

Moments where they can explore, create, make messes, and use their imaginations without worrying about getting something “right.”

That’s one of the reasons we wanted to introduce creative workshops at EPC this summer—not as high-pressure classes, but as inviting spaces where older kids can create, experiment, and simply enjoy the process.

Why We’re Excited About Creative Workshops at EPC

As moms ourselves, we’ve always believed children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and free to explore.

That’s the heart behind everything we create at EPC—including our upcoming summer workshops and Artful Little Minds classes because kids need creative spaces. The kind of experience where kids leave proud of what they made—but even more importantly, proud of themselves.

The Bigger Picture

At the end of the day, art teaches so much more than painting techniques or color mixing. It teaches patience. Confidence. Problem solving.Self-expression. Creativity.Independence. And maybe most importantly—it reminds kids that their ideas matter.

So whether your little one becomes an artist someday or simply learns to think creatively in the world around them, those moments spent creating are never wasted. Sometimes the real masterpiece isn’t what they bring home. It’s the confidence, imagination, and little pieces of themselves they discover along the way.

Stay grounded & grateful,

Maria
